When I first started looking into cloth diapering I was most intimidated by flats. The thought of doing origami every time I had to diaper my baby was just overwhelming to me. But I was on a budget and I knew I’d be hand washing my diapers so it just made sense that I’d use flats. Once I figured out how to fold them I realized it was just as simple as any other type of diaper, and I still use them on my toddler.
This is my favorite fold for a new born start with your diaper laid out flat
Fold it in half from the bottom up
Then grab both layers and fold again from left to right
Now that you have a square grab only the first layer from the right top corner and pull it all the way to the left.
Pull the top layer to the right just until you have a triangle
Halfway there! gently flip the whole thing over. I would grab the bottom of the triangle and the bottom right corner so you don’t lose the fold you have already.
Now you have a square and a triangle…pull up the two layers of the square from the left and leave the triangle down.
I like to fold mine three times so it’s long and absorbent in all the right places for my boy so fold the square in half and then in half again and it almost looks like a diaper now.
Now at this point you can lay a baby on the diaper fold up from the bottom. I like to roll the sides to create nice seal around baby’s legs
At this point you can either add a “snappie” or just put a cover on it. Although a snappie keeps everything in place better I’ve definitely lost all my snappies at some point or another and simply closed the cover over it
If you like to prep and have all your diapers ready at once this fold holds up really well I prepped all my flats before my son was born and it was easy to just pull one out on-top of a cover
That’s how to fold flat cloth diapers for a newborn! This is just one of many ways to fold a flat diaper. I hope this information has been useful if you need anymore information check out my other cloth diaper posts or let me know in the comments.
